about

The Lady Franklin Bay Expedition (1881-1884), led by Lt. Adolphus Greely, was sent by the U.S. to the Canadian Arctic to establish Fort Conger, for the purpose of collecting meteorological, astronomical and polar magnetic data. A series of importune events and choices: the resupply ship unable to deliver food; Greely's order to move south for rescue, only to lose their ship in ice and float on an iceberg for days; for lack of food while marooned in a desolate landscape, they slowly succumbed to starvation, hypothermia — and possibly cannibalism. Only six of the twenty-five members survived the expedition, when finally in 1884, after much persuasion by Greely's wife Henrietta, the U.S. Army mounted a successful rescue operation to retrieve the men.

"Umingmak Nuna" is the Qikiqtaaluk (Inuit) name for Ellesmere Island, where remnants of Fort Conger's wooden buildings still stand.
